How does rail freight in India work?

Rail freight involves making use of the vast railway network in India to transport goods. Rail freight companies can make all arrangements for goods to be transported to any destination in the country through the railway freight network. Goods trains were earlier considered to be very slow and took days and weeks together to reach the destination. Rail cargo services in India have improved and the Indian Railways is now expanding and focusing on technology and innovations to provide better services.

Rail cargo services are quite competitive compared to road transport services. They are more secure and the vast network ensures many corners of the country are covered. One of the major innovations that the Indian government and the railways are working on is the concept of dedicated freight corridors. These corridors of train networks are meant for goods trains to travel. This would ensure goods trains can compete with road transport.

Some of the plans in this area include:

•    Two dedicated freight corridors – East and West corridors are currently being constructed. Once these corridors are ready, then the Govt. plans to start work on other corridors.
•    The Western corridor would start at Mumbai and reach UP over a distance of 1,483 km.
•    The Eastern corridor would start at Punjab and touch West Bengal and is expected to cover a distance of 1,839 km.
•    Once these corridors are ready, freight trains will move at the speed of 100 km/hr. Freight corridors will help railways gain an advantage in shipping of goods.
•    Once this is ready, four more corridors are expected to be started.

Rail freight companies can expect more demand thanks to the growth of the Indian railways. It is expected that more goods will be shopped through rail freight in the coming years, thanks to the improvement carried out by the railways.
